Let’s talk about arms. Very few women list them among their best bits. In fact, having toned arms is up there alongside learning another language and eating fewer biscuits when it comes to resolutions and goals. The language we use to describe our arms is pretty negative; we call them bingo wings, auntie arms and nanna wobble to name but a few! Despite all this, arm shaping exists on the periphery of foundation wear. So what are arm shapers, and do they work?
Arm shaping foundations
Arm shaping is a tricky area. Our arms need to be mobile, and are either covered in layers or openly on show. This means that when it comes to function and design there are a lot of challenges to consider. Overall styles of arm shaping fall into small sections of sleeve shapes, shoulder wrapping styles a bit like a bolero or shrug, and a full coverage sleeved top or bodysuit. Like any other shapewear, it’s important to size correctly. You’ll soon notice the lack of mobility if your arm compression is too severe.
Compression Sleeves
This shaping style is a bit like the arm warmers that you’ll see athletes use. Just with a bit more squeeze! Compression sleeve designs are geared to improving blood circulation, and to provide support to reduce the risk of injury. The best products will sculpt and shape your arms subtly. Since the compression starts below your armpit, firm compression would not create a smooth line, so this type of shaping should only be gentle.
Shoulder Wraps
Extending from the biceps to encompass the shoulders, these wraps support and correct your posture while shaping your arms. Garments may run from your wrist or your elbow, and since they are anchored over the shoulders are an extremely secure and smooth way of shaping. This means that you can choose firmer compression if you prefer, which has the benefit of pulling your shoulders down if you tend to carry tension there.
Sleeved Tops
Of course, arm shaping can be combined with back and tummy shaping too. With sleeves that may reach your wrist, or shorter elbow length coverage, this is a more comprehensive foundation. The great thing about full torso shapewear is that it provides an uninterrupted silhouette that looks great under any kind of outfit. Much like a shaping cami, which cinches your waist, tummy and hips, these tops shape and support in a more overall way.
Arm Shaping Myths
One of the most pervasive myths about arm shapers is that they can tone your arms. It’s crucial to understand that while arm shapers can instantly improve the appearance of your arms, they do not directly contribute to muscle toning or fat loss. Compression sleeves specifically can aid recovery from exercise or training and promote blood flow that allows you to push yourself further as part of training. For long term arm toning, regular muscle focussed strength training is key. You can start with everyday household items like bags of flour or tins of beans and go from there!
Seasonality of arm shaping
Of course, and perhaps ironically, most of us start to notice our arms in the spring and summer. These seasons will generally mean that our arms are more exposed, so arm shapers may seem counter intuitive. Clearly the aim of shapewear is to remain invisible! Look for nude shades to sit underneath elbow length floaty sundresses and make sure you shop for breathable, moisture wicking fabrics. The back and shoulder support that more encompassing styles include will empower your posture as well as slim your arms. So as well as an improved drape of fabric over your body, you’ll look and feel more confident.
However you feel about your arms, the most important thing is to carry yourself with confidence. This is a huge ask sometimes so it’s understandable that arm shapers can help if that area is a particular worry for you. Remember, though, that your body is amazing and that all kinds of shapewear are there to support you, not constrict you.
