Style and menopause. They have one thing in common and that’s how unique they are from woman to woman. Perimenopause and menopause challenge us in different ways, and it’s not uncommon to have feelings of anxiety about your appearance at this time. A crisis of confidence of sorts. With physical changes that feel more dramatic than steady ageing, we can feel out of place in our own bodies. Just not quite like ourselves. But now is not the time to “grow old gracefully”. Far better to rediscover the parts of your look that make you feel like you and work out how to stay feeling comfortable and confident.
Accepting change
The drop in oestrogen during perimenopause and menopause causes physical changes. It may be different for each individual, but changes will definitely happen. Commonly, we notice a filling out of the waist, larger, softer breasts, and dryness and decreased elasticity in our skin. As a consequence, you might put on an old faithful outfit and wonder who you’re looking at in the mirror.
Recognising and accepting these changes is the first step towards adapting your style in a way that feels true to you. It’s about finding a balance between comfort and fashion, allowing you to express your personality while feeling at ease in your evolving body.
Don’t lose yourself
Your style is an extension of your personality. Menopause shouldn’t change that. If anything, it’s an opportunity to refine your style and focus on what garments bring you joy. Start by assessing your wardrobe, keeping pieces that make you feel confident and empowered. Think about combining comfort with elegance – do you prefer structure or movement? It’s different for everyone. There are practical things to think about, such as the breathability of fabrics if you’re struggling to regulate your body temperature for example.
Take the time to get to know your current self so that you can dress in a way that’s authentically you. If you love bold colour, go for it. The same goes for patterns and prints. You don’t have to stop wearing short skirts or on-trend jeans. Individuality trump’s fashion, and that’s a part of self acceptance that can be a benefit of ageing.
Support where it’s needed
Shapewear can be a powerful ally during menopause, offering support to your back, shoulders and hips. A shaping cami is a gentle and comfortable way to cinch your waist and make you feel much more like yourself. Even a simple pair of high waisted control briefs provides a foundation that enhances your figure and boosts your confidence. Good shapewear prioritises comfort, using breathable fabrics and targeted compression to support you without feeling restrictive. Choose the right compression for your needs, and if you’re considering daily wear shaping, stick to more moderate compression.
Interpreting trends
Staying on point through menopause doesn’t mean you have to slavishly follow every trend. It’s about selectively incorporating elements that resonate with your personal aesthetic. Pay attention to trends that appeal to you and think of ways to adapt them to suit your body and comfort level.
For instance, if you fancy trying out an on trend oversized blazer but you harbour reservations, look for a version with a cinched waist to add definition. Love the idea of bold prints but prefer a subtler approach? Try incorporating them through accessories like scarves or handbags. It’s all about making the trend work for you, not the other way around.
Remember, style is not about age; it’s about attitude. Understand and adapt to the changes your body is experiencing, and make the most of shapewear for added confidence. Most importantly, keep your personality at the forefront of your style choices and your confidence will follow.
