The idea of adapting a body shape to suit a popular image can be traced back to the invention of the corset and even beyond! So we’re going back as far as the 1700’s here. And since ideas of the female body are so interlinked with gender politics, the ‘ideal female body’ goes back even further than that. But you’re not here for a history lesson. Body image has come a long way and we’re interested in the ‘now’.
So what are we even talking about when we refer to the ‘perfect’ body shape. Is it the body you start with, or the body that’s presented as part of an overall image? They’re very different things, and the blurring of lines between these concepts is often where body dissatisfaction springs from. Don’t confuse perfection with fashion. Or reality with Instagram! Let’s break it down into parts.
Bums
There’s currently a Kardashian inspired trend towards prominent, curvaceous bottoms. Remember, what looks great on the red carpet may not feel great when you’re living with it all day! So if you’re looking to show off your summer shorts, go for medium control shaping briefs that gently lift your bottom while smoothing your tummy. This subtlety of lift that shapewear provides allows you to adapt your own shape with a nod to trends, while still remaining comfortable.
Waists
Trends in waist shape are perhaps the most fluctuating element of the ever changing ‘perfect’ body. From waif-like rectangle to bombshell hourglass, your waist is your core and therefore the most important part of building an image. It’s also the part of you that can be most altered by shapewear. Which is great because you don’t want to wear the same and look the same every day! So if you’re wearing a floaty summer dress, go for a control slip that smooths your lines in a soft way. And if you want to create a splash in eveningwear, choose a wast cinching body corset or body shaping suit.
Legs
Right, we’re going to have to talk about the ‘thigh gap’. If like us, you sigh inwardly at this phrase, you’re well entitled to! Despite what Love Island may suggest, thigh gaps are not common, nor are they a sign of the ‘perfect body’. Instead, they are a result of women training themselves to stand a certain way! More realistically, then, smooth lines are the order of the day when it comes to thighs. So from trouser suits to evening gowns, the key is to extend the line from your waist, which is why shaping shorts are so very popular. Don’t forget, too, that great legs rely on great shoes!
Bust
Going back through time, the perfect bust has really gone through the mill! From Kate Moss to Marilyn Monroe, nothing is under more scrutiny – from both men and women alike! One thing is certain, though, you probably dislike what you have. But we’re here to tell you that all busts are perfect – and more importantly, all busts are flexible! You can be boosted up with a corset or gently supported with an underwired cami. All depending on your mood. And whatever you do with your bust, it’ll still be perfect!
Silhouette
The sum of its parts, then, is an overall silhouette. The shape you arrive at. What’s the perfect silhouette? Waif or voluptuous? Sporty or soft? Well, here’s the thing: it doesn’t matter. When it comes to a silhouette, smooth lines are the only thing of consequence. And smooth lines are achieved by well fitting shapewear. So it’s worth your while spending the time getting your fit right and choosing quality garments. Both of which we can help you with here at Elle Courbee!
So the truth is that there is no perfect body shape. There is just you, wonderful you. And with good shapewear, you can tweak your shape to suit your mood. You have a great body, don’t be afraid to use it!
