They’ve been with us all year, and Autumn / Winter 2022 sees no end to the trend for cut outs. But as the weather turns, how practical is it to have sections cut out of your clothes? Are they cute, or just cold? In all truth, your view on the subject probably depends a bit on your age. As we get older we tend to feel rather less inclined to pay the fashion Gods with the sacrifice of feeling chilly. But there’s hope on the horizon, since this Autumn’s version of the cut out is a little more subtle and a lot more sliced.
Trousers
To avoid things getting too draughty this winter, keep the trouser cut outs minimal. Flared leggings with slits at the hem are an understated way to wear cut out style. A more dramatic look sees cut out shapes right down the outside leg. This will definitely feel colder, but let’s face it you’re not going to be wearing these trousers for a country walk. So as far as dance floors go, you may well find ventilation helpful!
Tops
Our favourite cut out style for tops is the over bust slice. It’s flattering both for busty and less busty figures, and there is a huge amount of variety out there. From horizontal to asymmetric, barely there slither to sweeping curve, there’s something for everyone. These cut out tops are ideal for layering, and work as daily or evening wear.
Sleeves
The trouble with cut out shoulders is that they are definitely cold. If it’s warm enough for shoulders to come out, it’s probably too warm for long sleeves. So there are precious few days of the year where this style is comfortable to wear. We prefer the slightly more whimsical side sleeve cut out. A wide sleeve means that the cut outs are more gentle and give a romantic feel.
Jeans
The original cut out, ripped jeans are the casual way to flash a glimpse of skin. The classic knee rips remain a constant in an ever changing fashion plain. We’re seeing thigh holes everywhere at the moment, too. Layer bright tights under ripped jeans for a cheery look when the temperature plummets.
Party Dresses
With party season just around the corner, a cut out dress will be a go-to for many of us. Triangular cuts at the waist are elegant and formal, while bust and leg cuts are more flirty and fun. Classic black and vibrant neon are around in equal measure. The main thing when it comes to party dresses, though, is to not think about the weather. This garment should be all about the party.
Plus Size
Should you consider body shape when you’re looking at cut out style? Not really is the short answer. If you like an outfit, just wear it! Importantly for anyone wearing cut out styles, size correctly. This will prevent any flesh bulging that will just make your outfit uncomfortable. Looking great in a style comes from inner comfort and confidence, so wear what brings you joy!
Positioning
The absolute most important thing for carrying off a good cut out is to remember the line your underwear. The last thing anyone wants is to flash a view of your control briefs as you get on the dance floor! So just pay attention to where everything sits, and choose nude shades of shapewear to be on the safe side.
Even if the thought of a cut out makes you feel chilly as the temperatures drop, don’t forget that this is why coats were invented! You can snuggle down in a nice Autumn jacket and keep out the draft until you’re safely delivered to your party venue!
