Which shapewear should I use to perfect my curves?

August 15, 2024 //  by Becky Hinshelwood

Fashion is as diverse as the women who wear it, and at the heart of every perfect outfit is the right foundation. Shapewear has emerged as a real game changer in the world of style, not only for visual image, but also for body support and confidence. While a great pair of control shorts or a sleek bodysuit can streamline your natural shape, it is your natural shape which is a good place to start in your search for the perfect shapewear.

Different bodies different shapewear

No two bodies are alike, and we should embrace and celebrate this. However, it also means that different women have different shapewear needs. There is no one garment that suits everyone. For some women, shapewear offers support and smoothing effects, creating a streamlined silhouette underneath fitted clothing. For others, it helps enhance their curves, adding dimension and shape to areas they wish to accentuate. Understanding your own body shape and what you want to achieve with shapewear is crucial in selecting the right piece.

Fitting for body shapes

Each body shape has its unique characteristics, and different types of shapewear can enhance or balance your natural silhouette. There are a few key body shapes that most women fall into, and understanding these can help you choose the right shaping garments.

Hourglass

Women with an hourglass figure have a well defined waist and balanced bust and hip measurements. Shapewear that highlights the waist can enhance this naturally curvy figure. Waist cinchers or full-body shapers are ideal, as they accentuate the waist without flattening the bust or hips.

Pear

A pear shaped body features wider hips and thighs with a smaller bust. The goal is often to balance proportions by enhancing the upper body and smoothing the lower half. Shaping shorts or firm compression control briefs can provide a smoothing effect, while padded bras can add volume to the bust.

Apple

Apple shaped bodies tend to carry weight around the midsection. Shapewear that offers compression in the tummy area while allowing freedom in the bust and hips can create a more defined waistline. Waist control girdles or bodysuits are good choices for this shape.

Rectangle

Rectangle-shaped women have a similar width across the bust, waist, and hips, creating a straight silhouette. The aim is to create curves and definition. A sleek shaping cami gives a very natural curve for this shape.

Enhance not detract

Shapewear is not just about compression and minimising your waist or thighs. A great way to approach shaping is to focus on enhancing what you already have. It’s a tool that can help increase your body confidence by providing support and smoothing out the silhouette. For many of us, seeing a more polished version of themselves can be incredibly empowering.

Support

Good shapewear can help reduce self consciousness about certain areas, allowing you to focus on the things you love about your body. Whether you’re looking to smooth out lines, enhance curves, or simply have a more comfortable fit under your clothes, the right shapewear can make a significant difference. It can even support your muscles to reduce back and shoulder pain.

Comfort

It’s important to remember that shapewear should be comfortable to wear. It should support your body and allow you to move freely, without pinching or causing discomfort. Ensure that you size the garments correctly rather than going up or down a size. This will keep them comfortable and prevent the waistband or leg bands from rolling up or down.

Confidence

By changing your focus to be about celebrating what you have, shapewear can be a super confidence boost. When you feel confident, you’re more likely to take risks with fashion and try new things that express your personality. It’s about owning your look and loving what you see in the mirror. This inner confidence can radiate outwards, making you not just look but also feel beautiful.

Style empowerment

The right shapewear can empower you to take control of your style and present yourself in the best possible light. It’s about making conscious choices that reflect your personal taste and help you feel your best. Shapewear is just one part of a broader strategy for building self confidence and expressing yourself.

By understanding your body shape and selecting shapewear that complements it, you’re taking charge of your appearance. This empowerment translates into confidence, allowing you to wear whatever you love with pride. Whether it’s a floaty, figure skimming dress or a pair of high-waisted jeans, the right shapewear can help you feel secure and fabulous.

Remember, confidence is the most important accessory you can wear. Shapewear is there to support you, not define you. Use it to accentuate your natural beauty, and most importantly, wear it with pride. Your body is unique, and your style should reflect that. With the right shapewear, you can perfectly showcase your curves and express your style in the most authentic way.
