What is the best colour for everyday underwear?

January 4, 2024 //  by Becky Hinshelwood

Are you an underwear matcher, or more of a grab it and go type? Bras, knickers, bodysuits and cami’s come in every colour under the sun, and day to day we each make a choice. Most will have specific lingerie for special occasions or particular outfits. But when it comes to daily choices, is it wise to have a go-to colour? Can the colour of your underwear actually impact your mood? And if you have a rainbow in your underwear drawer, what does your choice say about you?

Colour and mood

The colours that we surround ourselves with can affect our mood. This goes for your interior decor, your choice of handbag and even your underwear! You might not see it for most of the day, but you know what colour you’re wearing. In fact, you probably chose it to reflect your mood when you got dressed that day! Here’s a quick guide to what your underwear colour might be telling you about how you’re feeling.

Black

Classic and sensible, black is most women’s go-to underwear colour. It’s the little black dress of our underwear drawers – reliable and elegant. When you choose black underwear, you’re likely to be fostering a feeling of understated confidence.

White

Fresh and bright, white underwear brings with it a feeling of spring time. It’s an optimistic underwear colour that brings with it a lightness of being. Sometimes we choose white to reflect this existing feeling, and other times we might choose white to create it.

Red

Vibrant and daring, red is an underwear colour that women choose to signify fun. Far from the sexualised stereotype of red, this choice is actually playful and joyful. You might choose it if you’re in the mood to take some risks. That might mean anything from skydiving to standing up to your boss!

Blue

There are so many blue hues that this colour can probably have a whole article to itself! Navy is both formal and elegant, royal blue is sexy, electric blue is wild and pastel blue is calming and serene. If you have all of these blues in your underwear drawer, then lucky you!

Pink

Pink underwear isn’t just for kids! From cute pastels to empowering fuschia, pink underwear emboldens and empowers your femininity. You’ll likely choose to wear this colour underwear when you need a heightened sense of confidence and self love.

Green

Shades of green are celebratory and organic. You’ll benefit from a sense of freedom when you choose to wear green underwear. Not as much freedom as going commando of course, but there we go!

Pattern or plain?

Does it matter if you choose a pattern on your underwear? Of course there are practical implications such as the visibility of a bra through a shirt, for example. However, having patterned underwear can really lift your feelings of creativity. Don’t be fooled into thinking that when you buy patterned underwear, you’re choosing to forever wear a matching set. That’s not a rule! No one ever said that you can’t mix patterns with plain, or even contrast patterns. Your clothes, your choice!

Functional Underwear

Underwear with a job is a great thing. Shapewear has the power to smooth out all the bits that bother you and give your confidence a lift. And there’s no reason not to use it daily as long as you keep the compression moderate. However, if colour choice is your thing, the function has probably lost a bit of the fun with this type of underwear. Most garments are available in black, white and nude. This is great for special occasions because these are the most versatile of colours for remaining invisible under your outfit. For times that you want to inject a bit of fun, though, try pairing black or white control briefs with a vibrant bra!

We build our sense of self from the base up, and this goes for your underwear too. There will be times that colours can make you feel great, and other times that compression will boost your confidence. This is why variety is the most important thing to keep you ready for anything!
