As summer gives way to cooler autumnal temperatures, it’s time to put away your swimwear, maxi dress and sandals and start thinking about trends for the coming season.
Even the most fashion-forward among us won’t annually completely revamp their wardrobe. No, it’s about adding select pieces to revamp what works for you. The right jewellery, pop of colour or coat can ensure an old outfit is bang on trend if you know the right pieces to look for.
Here’s our pick of the top trends to look out for in autumn/winter 2020:
1. Jewel tones
Look out for beautiful jewel tones of ruby, amethyst, jade and sapphire this season. Bold, rich tones will be everywhere, but if you’re not ready to invest in a luxe suit then just find a hue that suits you and experiment with one item of clothing. For example, a sweater or a blazer will do. You can even add a pop of colour to your outfit simply by carrying a soft, coloured clutch. This accessory is set to be hugely popular this season too, and was favoured by plenty of designers on the AW2020 catwalks, including Miu Miu and Bottega Veneta.
2. Colour blocking
In keeping with the eye-popping shades you’ll see on the high street this season, the bold among you can experiment with colour blocking. Don’t be scared – purple and red can look amazing together! This was featured on the AW2020 catwalks of Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent and Alberta Ferreti, and while we may not see too much of this type of solid blocking on the high street, we’ll definitely see the colour mix in the tartans and plaids that are also set to be huge this fall.
3. Preppy
For those that came of age in the 90’s, this is a dream, come true. Think grown up ‘Clueless’ for the mix of plaids and tartans, with layered tops and cute cardigans. This nod to nostalgia is seen in the Dior Fall and Chanel Fall 2020 collections. Finish the look with a blazer and loafers for the complete preppy look.
4. Metallics
Shine bright like a diamond! Get ready for an ultra-luxe look this season, with silver mesh dresses and plenty of crystal and rhinestone embellishments. Featured on catwalks such as Balenciaga and Burberry, this is definitely one for an elegant night out!
5. Capes
Ultra feminine and great for all shapes and sizes, the cape is due for a big come back this season. Nip it in at the waist à la Valentino for an alluring, dramatic look.
6. Fringing
We’re not talking Hell’s Angel’s leather jackets here. No, fringing has gone ultra-glam, with catwalks such as Dior and Prada featuring long, extreme fringing on dresses, skirts and coats. Don’t be afraid to experiment with this look, it’s actually incredibly versatile and can be used to amazing effect on formal and boho outfits.
7. Doll dresses
The eager eyed among us would have spotted this fashion trend take hold during the summer months. It’s actually set to crossover in into the autumn/winter season and can be fashioned biker chic with boots and leather or enigmatic and feminine, with lots of sheer layering. Check out the Gucci collection for more inspiration.
8. Lingerie as outerwear
OK, so we’ve seen this look before. Lingerie as outerwear isn’t exactly something new, but it’s set for a comeback this season. Pair your favourite bra under a formal blazer, or a cute bralette under a loose cardigan. This look might not be practical, but if fashion houses such as Dolce & Gabbana are correct in their predictions, it will be popular!
9. Ruffles
This pretty detailing will be everywhere this season, and suits every silhouette out there. Think over-the-top shoulder ruffles for extreme fashionistas, simple shirt ruffles for the more conservative dresser, and ruffled ‘Ra Ra’ skirts and dresses for the party goers. This style softens even the most formal of outfits and is definitely a lovely, romantic touch as we move into cooler temperatures.
10. Power dressing
In the autumn/winter season, we’ll definitely see a move toward 80’s power dressing, but with a softer feel. Think tailored jumpsuits and cropped, boxy blazers, and slouchy suits in vibrant colours. There will definitely be a style for everyone….Dynasty and Dallas fans, your time has come!
