Ah, spring. As the weather warms up, the world around us just seems to wake up from the winter slumber. Flowers bloom, colours become vibrant, and we’re suddenly surrounded by birdsong. This can mean only one thing. Yes, it’s time to shed those chunky knits, cast aside the long winter coats and finally transition into spring fashion! But what pieces should you invest in this spring? Well, in this article we’d like to give you the lowdown on the next big thing. The one item you should invest in now, and it may come as a surprise, but it’s actually a garment that originated in the world of shapewear…..
All rise the corset!
Here at Elle Courbee, we’re all about celebrating curves, and integrating shapewear with plus size fashion. So what better way to do this than by combining the two this season? Yes, we’re talking the eponymous corset. Spring 2021 is set to see this most contouring piece of underwear worn as outerwear, to amazing effect. In fact, it’s due to be one of the biggest trends of 2021. So get ready for this wardrobe revolution now and make sure you’re ready to step out in style in the weeks and months ahead…
Here are our top style tips for wearing your ‘lingerie out’ this spring:
1. Prep up the androgynous look with a matching trouser suit
Pair your corset with a trouser suit for the ultimate in sexy chic. The corset will give you mind-blowing curves. Worn under a loose-fitting suit, the combination of structured and unstructured is ultra-feminine and a softer take on the 80’s power suit.
2. Keep it simple with high-waisted mom jeans
Wear your corset with high-waisted, baggy jeans for a really striking look. This is probably the easiest way for most of us to incorporate a corset into our spring wardrobe. Keep your corset simple, in monochrome colours, but pair with gold chain necklaces and a blazer or leather jacket and you’ll ooze Madonna-esque ‘Who’s that girl’ glamour.
3. Unleash your inner warrior with a dress
This might be a little daring for some, but if you’re feeling girl power then try wearing a narrow black corset over a t-shirt dress. The structure of the corset will give an otherwise drab t-shirt dress just the contouring you need to achieve hourglass curves. Channel your inner Xena, Princess Warrior by adding combat boots or gladiator sandals and you’ll be ready to battle the day ahead. For cooler days, add an oversized denim jacket for an edgier, yet practical, look.
4. Keep it simple over a turtleneck
Wearing a corset over a simple turtleneck is an incredible way to transform an outfit. This styling can be dressed up with a pencil skirt or toned down with jeans. You’ll want the corset to be in a contrasting colour to your top, but keep the overall colour palette as monochrome as possible. You don’t want to draw attention away from the superb styling at your torso. One tip, it might be time to mothball the skinny jeans. Flares, bootlegs and straight-legged jeans will be everywhere this season.
5. Try layering with a crisp white shirt
This look is another feminine take on androgynous styling, and it’s set to be bang on trend this spring. Pair a black corset with an oversized white shirt, leaving the lower half and the upper half of the shirt unbuttoned. Given the complexity of this look, we recommend styling with skinny trousers. Gigi Hadid was definitely fashion forward in 2016 when she wore this exact outfit! She actually paired a satin corset with her outfit, adding a layer of texture that just worked so well with the slightly distressed black jeans.
As you can see, the corset is set for a major revival in 2021. No longer the preserve of shapewear and waist training, corset-style garments should be top of your shopping list this spring. Here at Elle Courbee, we have some lovely plus-size corsets in stock, including the satin style that’s favoured by A-listers. So shop our styles, and be ready for this year’s style revolution.
