Can your shapewear be comfortable in warm weather?

April 25, 2024 //  by Becky Hinshelwood

When Spring rolls around, we rather optimistically start thinking about warm weather. There may still be cold snaps ahead, but at some point we’ll surely get a summer! So, how do you feel about it? Do you long for warmer, longer days where you’re free from wearing all the layers? Or do you dread the thought of abandoning your shapewear foundation as the temperatures hot up? Maybe it’s a bit of a mix. We don’t think that shapewear should be out because warmer climes are in. Are there ways to keep your shapewear comfortable in warm weather, then?

Think about your skin

We all know how uncomfortable the heat can make us. Instinctively, we tend to assume that looser, lighter layers are the key to staying cool. This is true to a certain extent, but it doesn’t always hold that this is the most comfortable dressing option. Shapewear actually has several features that make it work with your body when it’s warm.

Lightweight panelling

Opt for shapewear with light, sheer panels or mesh inserts which allow your skin to breathe. These are not only pretty and feminine, but also help in regulating your body temperature. Panels also mean that the compression in control briefs or shorts is focussed rather than generic. So compression panels which target the tummy, hips, and thighs. This means that you’re getting support in the right places and air movement in others.

Fabric that breathes

Shapewear with moisture wicking properties and high breathability is a game changer. Look for blends with lightweight lycra, microfibre, and airy cotton to stay comfortable and mobile. Then there’s construction technologies to look out for. Seamless bands and flat edge hems all contribute to shapewear comfort, especially in the heat.

Keep chafe at bay

In actual fact, shapewear can make you feel more comfortable in warm weather than without. Anyone who’s ever experienced the dreaded thigh chafe knows exactly what we’re talking about! So, your shaping shorts can actually be the one piece of underwear that is a daily must have over the summer!

Getting the right fit

It’s something that we bang on about all the time, but sizing will have a huge impact on how comfortable your shapewear is in the heat. Size down a dress size and you’ll not only encourage lumps and bumps in your silhouette, but you’ll feel oppressed and overheated! Your circulation is so important in regulating your body temperature, so it’s crucial that you don’t compromise this with your shapewear choices.

When to size up

Some shapewear garments, often bodysuits or camisoles, are manufactured to cover a range of sizes. If, for example, you’re a size 18 and you’re choosing between garments that are available in size 16-18 or 18-20, it’s likely that the most comfortable option will be the size up. Another approach is to measure your waist and consult the brand size guide. Whichever size range matches with your wait measurement is the right one for you.

Moderate Compression

Opt for shapewear that offers moderate compression. These pieces will smooth and shape your line gently, adapting to your body’s movements in a supportive way. A moderate compression means that your foundation layer is doing helpful things like preventing chafe, supporting your back, and minimising movement as you go about your day. It may not be the most dramatic shape cinching, but in warm weather, it’s the most natural and comfortable.

Visual Aesthetic

With lighter fabrics comes a certain amount of underwear consciousness. When your go-to foundation may be a black lace shaping bodysuit, this isn’t ideal under a pastel pink sun dress. It’ll be visible in colour and texture. So think under the radar when it comes to summer shapewear aesthetics.

Light colours

Opt for white or nude shades for your summer shapewear choices. Not only are they less likely to show through lighter, more translucent summer fabrics, but lighter colours also absorb less heat..

Smooth textures

Simplicity is your friend for summer shapewear. Smooth, unembellished, matte fabrics will blend into your line under a floaty, clingy fabric. Garments like a shaping slip are a wonderful base on which to let those flirty summer styles hang beautifully.

So, while the idea of compression may feel counterintuitive for warm weather, shapewear can actually be your summer friend. With gentle support for your body and protection from chafing, you can look great and feel confident once those summer climes finally arrive!
