Opening your wardrobe doors to get dressed should be an exciting, enjoyable experience – especially with summer on the horizon! But for many plus-sized women. it’s a frustrating process as we decide what will flatter us or be most comfortable. But we believe that everyone deserves to feel fabulous, no matter what size they are. So to get ready for summer, here are 5 tips to get you excited about your wardrobe and feel catwalk confident in every outfit.
Out With The ‘One Day’
The place to start is a good declutter. We all have a habit of hanging onto certain items of clothing, even if we haven’t been able to wear them in a while. These ‘one-day’ clothes might be aspirational in your head, but in reality, all they’re doing is taking up space in your wardrobe and in your head. Get rid of them, along with any of those boxy, unstylish items that never seem to sit right on you. Now, start filling all of that extra space with pieces that excite you, make you feel great, and get you buzzed to open the wardrobe in the morning.
Dress For Length
One of the best things we’ve ever read is: ‘weight is a horizontal thing’. It’s so true! weight adds width at the bust, waist, hips and thighs, but the length of your legs, arms and torso will never change. So if you want to dress in a way that flatters your figure, go for items that create the illusion of a longer, taller silhouette. There are a couple of different ways you can do this – dress in one colour, wear high-rise jeans, 3/4 sleeve tops, wearing high-sitting belts or shoes that add some elevation.
Define Your Waist
No matter what size or shape you are, you still have a waistline. Many plus-size women will opt for baggy tops and avoid belts, particularly if they’re sensitive about belly weight. But a belt can help define your shape and distract the eye. Where baggy tops can make you look blocky, adding a belt at the waist or under the bust can create an intentional, elegant silhouette. Try adding a belt to your favourite shirt dress, wrap dress, jumpsuit or sun dress and see what a difference it can make!
Wear The Right Bra
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it ay in – the right bra can make or break an outfit. And, since many women don’t want to rely on shapewear to feel confident, investing in the right bra is even more important. Opt for a bra that lifts your breasts, and it will instantly improve the look and fit of any outfit. Try this one for ultimate shape and support. Just make sure it’s the right size and fits comfortably. For other underwear, seamless panties help reduce lines and wrinkles in your clothes and are much more comfortable to wear in warmer weather. Especially if they’re made from cotton or silk!
Add A Jacket
It might seem odd to be suggesting a jacket or cardigan in warm weather, but hear us out. Structured jackets or cardigans act as a ‘topper’ for every outfit, and they can add structure and definition, or flowing lines. Either way, they are perfect for those ‘bleurgh’ days when you just aren’t feeling body positive.
Ultimately confidence is all in the mind, but the way we dress can certainly give us a boost! Giving yourself a solid wardrobe foundation is a great start and we can’t wait to see what kinds of amazing looks you’ve created!
